Pooling
Pooling is the process of gathering enough travelers on a single trip before reaching out to operators for price proposals. It is the mechanism that makes shared private aviation economically viable — and it is one of the things that makes jet4us fundamentally different from traditional charter booking.
Why pooling exists
A private aircraft costs the same whether it carries one passenger or ten. When a single traveler books alone, they absorb that full cost. When multiple travelers share the same flight, everyone pays a fraction of the price.
Pooling builds that shared demand before an operator is ever contacted. This means:
- Operators receive a complete, fully-committed passenger group — not a speculative inquiry
- Travelers get pricing based on a realistic load, not a worst-case solo fare
- The route is more likely to be served because the economics work for everyone
The pooling lifecycle
A Book Seat trip request moves through the following stages:
DRAFT → POOLING → FULL → OFFERS_REQUESTED
| Stage | What it means |
|---|---|
| Draft | The trip owner is still setting up the request. No one else can see or join it yet. |
| Pooling | The trip is live and open for others to join. Seats are filling up. |
| Full | All seats have been reserved. Pooling is closed. The owner can now send the request to operators. |
| Request Sent | Operators have been notified and are preparing price proposals. |
How seats fill up
Seats on a pooling trip are filled in two ways:
- Direct joins — Other travelers find your trip (if it is Public) and request to join. When accepted, their seat is reserved.
- Invited seats — You invite specific people. Their reservation counts toward the seat total even before they complete their onboarding.
Both types count toward filling the aircraft to capacity.
Public pools vs Private pools
When you create a Book Seat trip request, you choose who can find it:
Public
- Your trip appears in search results on the Book Seat tab
- Any traveler on the platform can discover your trip and request to join
- Great for maximising reach and filling seats faster
- You can still review and approve join requests
Private
- Your trip does not appear in any search results
- Only people you personally invite can join
- Ideal when you want to control exactly who is on the flight
You can change visibility between Public and Private while your trip is in Draft or Pooling status. Once the trip is sent to operators, visibility can no longer be changed.
When the pool is full
Once all seats are reserved and your trip reaches Full status, pooling closes. No new travelers can join.
As the trip owner, you then review the confirmed group and send the trip request to operators. This is the moment the platform broadcasts your demand to the operator network and begins collecting price proposals.
When a pool expires before filling
Not every trip fills to capacity. If a pooling trip does not gather enough travelers before its deadline, the trip reaches Expired status.
When this happens:
- No operators are ever contacted — your demand was never broadcast
- No money changes hands
- You are free to create a new trip request for the same route
Expiry is checked when you open the app or interact with the trip — not on a real-time clock. See Expiry for more detail.
My Pools — lightweight pooling interest
The My Pools tab in Jet4Me is a separate feature from actively participating in a pooling trip.
My Pools lets you register lightweight interest in a route — a signal that you would consider joining a pool for a given city pair if one becomes available. It is not a booking and it does not commit you to anything.
Think of it as a standing hand-raise: "I'm interested in this route — let me know when a pool forms."
Pooling vs booking a seat on Fly Now
These are two distinct experiences:
| Pooling (Book Seat) | Fly Now seat booking | |
|---|---|---|
| What you're joining | A trip request still gathering travelers | An already-confirmed flight with open seats |
| Is the trip confirmed? | Not yet | Yes |
| Do you wait for operators? | Yes | No — operators already flew or scheduled this route |
| Payment timing | After offer is selected and trip is confirmed | Immediately upon booking |
If you want to fly without any wait, use Fly Now to find confirmed open-seat flights that are ready to book right now.
